Most people are not aware that table
tennis is a professional sport. Game play can be very intense and
also provide a great workout. Most metro areas of the country will have
a table tennis club nearby, where players of all ages and skill
levels get together to practice and compete.
Table Tennis uses a rating system similar to
the US Chess Federation to assess the skill of players. Most basement
players are rated around 1000, while the pros reach ratings of over 2000.
Individual clubs will maintain ratings and other statistics on their players,
but official ratings come only from the
USATT after
playing in sanctioned tournanments.
I've been playing at the
RI Table Tennis Association
on and off for many years. The ratings database on their website was
created with an Access database and includes an online updating tool, player
histories, and a round-robin rating calculator created with Javascript.
